Future Fashion of the Limitless Kind

We’ve been ueber lucky here at Molly Green-early on the universe brought Feral Childe to us.  We were looking for fashion with substance and an opinion about sustainability.  Feral Childe meets all the MG requirements (Made in the USA, using eco textiles and dyes, fab. style, etc.) but they represent so much more.  FERAL CHILDE is an innovative womenswear line by bi‐coastal design duo Moriah Carlson (Brooklyn, NY) and Alice Wu (Oakland, CA), who both received their graduate training in fine art (New York Studio School, Painting and Yale School of Art, Sculpture).  The label began as a series of art projects and has since evolved into a brand garnering critical praise and commercial success. Each season, Feral Childe’s collaborative drawings form the basis of the collection’s textile prints, wry construction details, and absurdist accessories. Feral Childe combines thoughtful choice of materials and attention to quality construction to make smart, wearable silhouettes for forward-thinking women.

We wanted to get the nitty gritty on these two & share with you.  Read on to find out what inspires these creative mavins and more!

Q:  How does your designing duo work?

A:  We’ve been collaborating for quite some time now. When we first started designing together we both lived in NYC. Now Moriah is in Brooklyn, and Alice is in Oakland. Even, so we still make all of the creative decisions together. This is a really important part of Feral Childe – we have always presented a combined aesthetic point of view and we always work as a team.  We start each collection with a marathon get-together to draw, paint and collage to make the new prints. Sometimes this session happens in Oakland, and sometimes in NYC.  We go over fabric swatches together, work out a color palette and sketch the silhouettes. We then split up to do our respective duties and periodically reunite throughout the season to critique and edit the collection.  We’re together to style and shoot the collection, and the process then starts all over again.

Q:  Define Feral Chile style?

A:  Feral Childe is a mash-up of high and low, casual and sophisticated, always thoughtful but never taking fashion too seriously. People know and love Feral Childe for our prints as well as our clothes that are comfortable enough to take you from day to night.

Q:  Which era of art inspires Feral Childe most?

A:  We are interested in time travel to the future!

Q:  Why is textile design so important?

A:  Textile design is part of a long tradition of skilled artisans making things by hand for everyday use and to pass on to generations beyond. Textiles have a life of their own and the drape and hand of a fabric often guide us as designers as to what the final garment will be. When we design our prints, and choose the textiles for each collection, we do so in hopes that we are creating clothing that will be treasured for many seasons to come.

Q:  How do you guys express yourself creatively besides in fashion and textile design?

A:  Moriah is a painter by training, and Alice is a sculptor. You can see hints of that background in everything that we do. We both love to draw, and we also love making photographs. Creating a fashion collection each season gives us many opportunities to express ourselves through a variety of media.

Q:  If Feral Childe were a dessert…which would it be?

A:  Marzipan. You can bend it, shape it, dye it . . .

Q:  What is your best fashion advice?

A:  Eat well and sleep more. Wear what makes you feel great. Invest in a few quality pieces rather than accumulating too many clothes. Shoes that make you feel comfortable and confident are key to completing the outfit as well. Wear less makeup and let your beautiful, natural skin shine.

Q:  How should Molly Green girls wear Feral Childe?  Where will it take them?

A:  Mix and match Feral Childe with your favorite Molly Green finds and treasures from your own closet. You can travel the world in Feral Childe, or find adventure in your own backyard. There are no limits and you never know where you’ll wind up, so we try to put pockets on everything to help you be prepared for whatever comes your way.

Thank you Alice and Moriah!  The fashion world is a better place because of you!

Watch the video here: Bib & Tucker Kickstarter

Our amazing friend and emerging Textile Designer Lillis Taylor has started a Sew-op coined Bib & Tucker.  It’s a multi-generational group of sewing enthusiasts who meet weekly to share their love of sewing in the historic Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham, Ala.  They have big plans for their growing group.  Dreams to create, design and quilt!  These ladies have the opportunity to purchase a long-arm sewing machine.  The machine will surely take them further than Quiltfest 2013. Here’s where you come in…they’ve created a kickstarter fundraising campaign.  You can donate anywhere from $5-$2000.  Bib & Tucker will use additional funds for supplies like thread, batting, fabric, rulers, scissors, rotary cutters, needles, pins and other materials needed to keep their sewing shop running!  Please take time to watch the video and DONATE!  If you donate here’s what you’ll get…gifts from Bib & Tucker

They’ve got some really great momentum and would love for you to be involved!  The ladies meet every Tuesday at Desert Island Supply Co. in Woodlawn.  Contact Lillis or the Molly Green girls for more information!  Find Bib & Tucker on Facebook here

It’s a Wrap

eliza and ethanPerfection, broadly stated is completeness with a touch of flawless.  With this definition in mind I’ll confidently claim I’ve found the perfect dress.  The Eliza and Ethan multi wrap dress fits about every occasion every body-type and size plus comes in 18 colors.  The dress can be wrapped in 20 different ways creating endless options for wear.  My personal favorite is the Grecian one-shoulder way in grey.  A surefire plan to keep your bridesmaids as friends post wedding day; let them wear a dress they will ALL look great in AND look forward to wearing again!  We’ve styled this dress for black tie parties, high school reunions and island vacations.  Best of all…it lives in a velvet pouch smaller than your purse…making it exceptionally neat for travel.  Watch the video below for wrapping instructions then, hop on over to Molly Green Boutique and try one on for yourself OR purchase here.

Accessorize Yourself

Granted, a big ole smile will always be my most prized accessory…but a bit of bling never hurt anyone.  I’m a huge fan of casual Friday, t-shirt Tuesday and wacky Wednesday…whatever that means.  Put me in a fresh cotton t, M2F skinny’s, my favorite 5″ maple pumps and you know it’s gonna be a good day.  For this reason it’s imperative I pile on the shiny things.  Earrings, a long necklace and a  huge statement watch are my usual go-to items.  I love cute little heart earrings and necklaces with zebras.  Fuel your need for kitch in the accessories section of the M.G. shop!  See ya soon, until then…keep it casual/yet excessively adorned.

So I couldn’t have asked for a more idilic evening.  Droves of locals, models, designers, and fun seekers gathered on Thursday evening for our Fashion’s Night Out block party. Highlights include killer fashion , yummy food from my personal favorite local food truck Shindigs, Dreamcakes cupcakes…making people happy, and my newest adventure: a 31 foot Airstream trailer called Indigo Luxe.
